Chapter 60

Druswood Manor, Northumberland

That evening the marquess sat down to write a brief note to the vicar at Barrasford village, an individual whom he had met and considered sensible, as vicars went. Mrs. Polebridge had agreed that Miss Sutton was in need of some improving activity.

“You could let her go, I suppose, my lord.”

The marquess regarded the older woman thoughtfully. “Is she causing you difficulties?”

“Well, not really, my lord.” The housekeeper sighed. “I’d hate to lose her, truth be. We’ve never had a harder worker—you wouldn’t think it, such a wee bit of a girl—and she has a head on her shoulders. You remember Penny, my lord, all that bother when I asked her to trim the wicks—?”

He did, indeed. Penelope Blyth had trimmed the wicks in half the manor’s candles right down to the wax, and Jeremy had been obliged to spend most of an afternoon digging them back out with a penknife.

“How the child thought they were to be lit again— Well, never mind. But with Isabelle, I’ve no need to watch her every step of the day.” The housekeeper frowned slightly. “Not on that account, anyways.”

The marquess had nodded. “Very well. Miss Sutton can stay for now. And we’ll see if Mr.—um—”

“Hepple, my lord.”

“Yes, of course. We’ll see if Mr. Hepple can provide some diversion.”

The vicar was delighted to be at the Marquess of Ashbourn’s service, of course, in anything he should desire; unfortunately, shortly after the marquess received his reply another problem arose with regard to Miss Sutton; she became suddenly very ill.
